The tradesmen who worked on the building site are located within an 18 km radius (note that the carpenter is 700 m away!).
Materials found on site
For 30% of the wood that makes up our chalets, a distance of only 1.5 km was covered between the standing tree and the installation on the chalet.
A PARTNERSHIP with the NFB
A partnership between the ONF, the commune of Bernadets-Dessus and Les Cabanes du Lizon has made this possible.
The choice of trees (Douglas fir) was made in consultation with the ONF technician, depending on the final need (size of the structural parts) but also the maturity of the tree or its capacity to generate new plants in its living environment.
The artisanal felling was carried out during the waning moon (the optimum period when sap rises less in the trunk).
Skidding was carried out in the traditional way using light equipment, by ourselves (thanks to our friends!), in dry weather so as not to disturb the ground or the access paths. The logs were then sawn 100m from where the huts were to be set up, thanks to the expertise of a sawyer who came with his mobile equipment. This enabled the wood to be cut as precisely as possible, with virtually no waste, since even the parts that could not be used for carpentry or joinery were used to heat the Nordic baths.
One chalet has 2 cob walls (earth mixed with sand, lime and straw). The earth, stored on site, came from an old sewage worksite and was mixed with straw from a wheat field located 300m from the worksite. This material improves the thermal regulation of the chalet.
Minimise the number of trees to be felled
The location of the 2 cabins in the undergrowth was carefully considered in order to keep the number of trees to be felled to a minimum. 5 ash trees were used to build the cabins.
To enhance the harmony of the site, 192 linear metres of hedgerow were planted. The project was made easier with the help of the M.N.E. 65 association (Maison de la Nature 65), which supplied the plants, protective accessories and advice at a competitive price.
We are also using the natural regeneration method to increase the number of hedges.
These hedgerows are now excellent refuges or perches for a multitude of sedentary or migratory passerines.
The cabins themselves make superb perches. The LA GRANGE chalet is home to a pair of Kestrels that nest on the roof ridge and a Barn Owl that perches under the entrance every night.
The lawn is mown in such a way that a large area of grass surrounding the cabins is only cut 2 or 3 times a year. This encourages the natural development of honey flowers, which bees, bumblebees and other pollinators love. It also helps to maintain a certain amount of coolness by reducing reverberation during dry periods, increasing photosynthesis capacity (and therefore reducing CO2 emissions) and helping to reduce excess water and run-off during periods of heavy rainfall.
Our sustainable approach continues with the choice of regional recipes that make up the breakfast and dinners we offer: they are prepared by producers located for the most part within a maximum radius of 21 km. Presented in glass jars, the containers are mainly reused afterwards.
